The way to the Jungfraujoch – The famous Jungfrau railway

The journey to the Jungfraujoch, the “Top of Europe” at an altitude of 3,454 metres, leads through a captivating world of rock, ice and snow. There are two ways to experience this unforgettable route through the Swiss mountains:

The fastest and modernest option is the Eiger Express, a tri-cable orbital cable car that is a part of the innovative V-Bahn project. The bottom station is located in the state-of-the-art Grindelwald Terminal. From there, the spectacular journey leads to Eigergletscher station and offers stunning views of the famous north face. At Eigergletscher there is a direct connection to the Jungfrau railway.

If you fancy something more traditional, you can take the impressive Wengernalp cog railway from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg. During the leisurely trip, there are already magnificent views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau to enjoy. At Kleine Scheidegg, transfer to the Jungfrau railway.

The Jungfrau railway runs through tunnels and covered sections with spectacular panoramic windows, past the ice lake and up to more than 3,400 metres. Awaiting you on the Jungfraujoch is a breathtaking glacial landscape with panoramic views of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps.

The Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch is far more than just a place – it’s a feeling. Also known as the “Top of Europe”, this is one of Switzerland’s most impressive destinations. At an altitude of 3,454 metres above sea level, it offers spectacular views, thrilling attractions and unique insights into Alpine nature, as well as technological history.

This is where adventure, relaxation and unforgettable experiences blend to create an unrivalled stay. With the “Alpine Sensation”, the Sphinx observation deck and the spellbinding ice palace, the Jungfraujoch already offers a wealth of special experiences. In addition, it is the perfect starting point from which to discover the attractions nearby – such as on a hike to the Mönchsjoch Lodge.

The Sphinx – High Above the Peaks
One of the main attractions of the Jungfraujoch is the Sphinx observation deck, which is easily accessible via a lift. From here, visitors enjoy a stunning, 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding peaks, the Aletsch Glacier – the longest glacier in the Alps – and on clear days even distant views as far as France, Germany and Italy.

As well as offering a spectacular view, the Sphinx is an important research station. Here, scientists examine glaciers, the climate in the high mountains, and other ecological relationships. For visitors, this is a special place where breathtaking views meet with fascinating insights into the scientific work of the region.

The Mönchsjoch Lodge – Alpinism at the Highest Level
From Jungfraujoch station, a hike of around 45 minutes along a well-maintained trail leads to the Mönchsjoch Lodge at an altitude of 3,650 metres. As the highest managed accommodation in the Swiss Alps, it offers walkers and climbers a welcome opportunity for rest and recuperation. The trail runs through a stunning high-mountain landscape in which snow, ice and rock blend to form a magnificent panorama.

Awaiting guests in the lodge are simple, tasty meals and hot drinks – particularly welcome after hiking in the clear mountain air. The Mönchsjoch Lodge is also a perfect starting point for Alpine tours and glacier hikes, which appeal to experienced climbers and ambitious hikers alike.

Alpine Sensation – A Journey through the History of the Alps
Alpine Sensation, an interactive adventure trail, combines the attraction of the ice palace with the Sphinx observation deck. This exhibition carries visitors away into the fascinating history of the Jungfraujoch and its legendary railway.

At its heart is the vision of the railway pioneer Adolf Guyer-Zeller, who drove forward construction of the Jungfrau railway at the start of the 20th century. Interactive displays, historic photographs and impressive installations illustrate the challenges and successes involved in this exceptional project.

The exhibition is a tribute to the labourers and engineers who achieved this feat in extremely difficult conditions. It demonstrates impressively how innovation and courage have made a lasting impact on the development of the entire region.

The Ice Palace – Art Sculpted in Ice
Deep inside the Aletsch Glacier, the ice palace is another highlight of the Jungfraujoch. This exceptional attraction was created in the 1930s by mountain guides, and it impresses visitors to this day with a stunning labyrinth of icy passages and chambers.

The sparkling walls, ceilings and floors are made of pure ice, which is artistically illuminated. Inside, you can marvel at the artistic sculptures – including animals, figures and abstract pieces, which are remodelled every year. The ice palace carries visitors into a magical world and demonstrates the harmonious blending of art and nature.

The Aletsch Glacier – A Natural Wonder
The Jungfraujoch offers a spectacular view of the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps at 23 kilometres long. As a part of the UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, it impresses with its massive size and majestic surrounding landscape.

Whether from the Sphinx observation deck or on a guided hike, the spectacle of the Aletsch Glacier is an unforgettable experience. At the same time, it stands as a reminder of the importance of climate protection, as the glacier is one of the regions most severely affected by climate change.

There’s so much to discover…
