More than 10 years ago, we pulled up stakes in Hamburg to take on a new challenge here in Grindelwald. Since then, we have had the privilege of welcoming guests from all over the world to the Hotel Derby! Every day is different, no season is like the next, but it’s always fun to be part of such a long-standing team and to look after our guests together with heart and soul!

Barbara
With over 30 years of reception experience, she is a beaming, cheerful soul. A bad mood? Never! She loves it when there is plenty going on, knows the area like the back of her hand, and is happy to give our guests insider tips for memorable trips that are off the usual routes.

Martin
Martin came to us from Germany more than eight years ago. His passion for traditional Swiss cuisine and his great talent enabled him to climb first to the position of Sous-Chef and later to Head Chef. Together with his crew, he is always working on refining classic dishes, using seasonal products creatively, and equally remaining faithful to authentic Swiss tradition. In his spare time Martin likes to get out and about on his motorbike, but what he loves best is spending time with his family.

Sam
Samuel was born in Australia and walked in looking for a temporary job to earn some money for his onward trip, during his European tour over 6 years ago. After a two-hour trial in the kitchen, it quickly became clear that he has a real talent for cooking. Instead of travelling on, he decided to stay, gradually worked his way through all the recipes and positions, and completed a three-year chef apprenticeship here. He is now our Sous-Chef and brings out the best from the kitchen team with his passion for cooking and his attention to detail.

Paulo
From Portugal, Paulo Martin joined our restaurant team more than 30 years ago. Since then, he has been an oasis of calm in our Föhrenstube restaurant, expertly looking after our guests in style – first as Chef de Rang and later as Deputy Service Manager. In the spring of 2023 we had the pleasure of handing over the restaurant management to Paulo. We knew that it is very important to him – just as it is to us – to offer our guests an outstanding and enjoyable restaurant experience.
